What causes dark spots on my flatware in a Bosch dishwasher?

My Bosch dishwasher (model SHU43C02UC) is 8 years old and I've had an ongoing problem with spots on flatware. Rusty in color and either gunky or baked on. I thought the spots only appeared on the knives but I recently purchased new flatware and, after the second wash, I see the same marks on the spoons in addition to the knife blades. I use The Barkeeper's Friend to remove the spots (soap and water doesn't work). I live in a hard water area and use a power dishwasher soap. My previous dishwasher was not a Bosch and I didn't have this problem. What causes dark spots on my flatware in a Bosch dishwasher?
It's probably the flatware, itself. Dish washer detergent is very caustic, but most flatware is built to withstand it.

You might think about buying new flatware.

I found many styles under $60 that should withstand your dishwasher and detergent. And some sets are as low as $20:

Some good names:

Pfaltzgraff, Oneida, Dansk, Lenox, Mikasa...these should all give you many years of flawless service. If you do buy a new flatware set, make sure the set states that it is dishwasher safe.

Good luck.

鈥inse your flatware thoroughly after eating to prevent staining..

鈥void overcrowding flatware in a dishwashing basket, as the utensils will likely not be cleaned properly..

鈥se a spot free agent to reduce spotting, and avoid using the heated drying cycle..

鈥nsure you are using the proper amount of dishwashing detergent when washing stainless steel flatware. If you use too much, it can result in dark spots on the utensils..

鈥void using dishwashing detergents that contain lemon, due to possible acid content..
