Hi,
Tonight I went out to this fancy high society bar in Washington D.C.
I am from Europe, not used to customs here.
I ordered beers. Not giving any tip, because in Europe we usually dont tip bartenders. After the 3rd beer order, the barkeeper simply ignored me. After lot of comunication from my side he told me: no beer for you any more. I said, why ? I can give you tips, its no problem! (at this time I really wanted to give a tip because I started to notice from the people around giving tips, I was willing to do so). But he said: No, its too late. Dont waste your time, you wont get any beer from this bar. I said: why are you angry on me? He said: because you are an ASSHOLE. I work for 2 dollars an hour just serving assholes like you.
I was soooo shocked, and did not know what to say. I said: sorry I didnt know that you have to give tips here. He said: Noo, I ve seen you 3 times here already (its true it was my 3rd time, but I didnt realize customs anyway.). I was soo upset, but afraid, I thought if I start a discussion or call him Asshole also, he will call the doorkeeper and will throw me out. So finally I just left without argueing with him.
This is the same bartender every night!
WHAT CAN I DO ?
The problem is I like this bar a lot, all my friends get there, and I just cannot accept it to not being able to order any beers anymore. Apart its embarrasing to tell that you have a problem with the barkeeper.
How is US law on that? Can I claim somewhere? Can I call him an Asshole too or will he or the doorkeeper beat me?
Thanks for your advices!!
Best regardsProblem with Barkeeper, Americans please help....!?
u don't have to tip him
he doesn't have to serve u
u can call each other names
he can get u kicked outt if u don't get out by urself.
it is illegal to have u actually beaten up unless its absolutely neccessary
i suggest u don't go there again even tho i understand that u didn't realize that u should tip waiters and bartenders.
i guess he thought u were making an excuse and was ticked off or something
I understand that in Europe the tip is included, right? Lucky. That sounds like it could get rid of an annoyance. He is right that it is customary to tip in the US because, bartenders and restaurant servers don't get paid very much depending on where they work. Their wages really depend on tips, seeing as the tip isn't included in your bill.
That being said, he had no right to deny anyone service, no matter how bad a customer he thinks anyone is. The customer is always right and the bar needs to make money. It's sad, but because of this, servers get a lot of ****. However, it's his job, and he has no right to take out the fact that he may hate his job on you. I don't think there's any laws that can help you, though, unless you were discriminated.
If you call him an asshole back you will most definitely be thrown out or beaten. But you can try one more time to explain that you're from Europe and things are different there. If not, you'll just have to tell your friends you need to find a different bar.Problem with Barkeeper, Americans please help....!?
Go to bar right as it's opening, when it's not too busy, and tell him you want to give him the tip from the other night. Be generous, and hand it to him before you start speaking, it's hard to ignore someone who's pushing money in your hand. Just tell him what you told us here- that in your country, waitstaff get paid actual living wages, and you didn't realize that in the US they only got paid peanuts and depended on tips. He should understand, and if he knows you're going to tip him in the future, he'll want you to come back.
