I work for a franchise Burger King, We are treated like dirt nobody has seen a raise in years. Is it possible to form union? The franchise company owns every BK in Rhode Island, all over South Coast MA, and CT. Would we need a majority of workers on board throughout the company, just our store, or just the stores in our city? Thank youIs it possible to form a workers union at a Burger King?
Call up a representative of the SEIU. They will point you in the right direction.
You can TRY to start a union. However, as Walmart did recently in Quebec, the company will simply close your store. Essentially, that's the only LEGAL way to stop unionization, If you could organize the entire company you'd obviously have a lot more leverage, but it's a VERY tough row to hoe. Many have tried, few succeed.
I can tell you, from personal experience in another fast food franchise company, that BK Corporate will apply large resources to prevent the organizing campaign. The truth is also that you are working a minimum wage job, and there really isn't anything the unions can say about that. They can argue all they want, but the truth is that the restaurants can't operate with higher wages. Is it possible to form a workers union at a Burger King?
Sure, it's possible, but since your industry hired completely untrained people at minimum wage, and as a result they have a nearly endless supply of labor, there's little point.
The only leverage a union has is to strike. And when your employers can just hire people off the street to replace you, then you have absolutely no leverage.
yes, but BK can just fire all of you that join and hire people that aren't a pain in the butt.
unless you are skilled, you offer nothing they need to keep around.
